Physio for ankle
Does every step you take cause pain?
Ankle injuries are another common ailment we physios see almost daily. While we often associate sprained ankles with sports injuries, ankle injuries are not just exclusive to athletes.
Ankles injuries can be incurred a number of ways, with the most common injury being sprains and strains.
Sprains vs strains
While they may sound similar, sprains and strains are vastly different types of injuries.
Sprains
Sprains occur when you damage a ligament in a joint. Ligaments are the connecting tissue that connects bones and cartilage within a joint, and damage to your ligaments can result in inflammation and swelling.
Strains
Strains on the other hand are when a muscle is overstressed, resulting in a pull, or even worse, a tear. Don’t expect to walk by yourself with a muscle strain.
Another common source of pain is plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation in the tissue in the heel. This condition is common in runners and those who wear shoes with inadequate heel support.
Other causes of ankle pain include:
- Arthritis
- Tendon injuries
- Gout (joint inflammation)
- Fractures
- Overstressing a joint
