At Physio Australia we see our fair share of athletes and manual labourers - it's true. However what most people don't know is that we actually see more office workers and everyday Aussies than we do superstar sporting heroes. Shoulder and neck pain are two parts of the body in particular where many people struggle and seek our help. Today, our physio in Highett talks you through an amazing exercise for shoulder, neck and arm pain using a real-life case example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_8RVIYzEKc Why Does My Shoulder Click? One of the most common questions I get in the clinic by far is - why does my shoulder click? Moving your shoulder in certain ways, for certain people can trigger a clicking, cracking, and/or popping sound. That popping sound is called crepitus. There are many possible causes of crepitus which I'll list below: Osteoarthritis: With age some of the lining of your joints, the cartilage, can wear thin due to the natural progressions of life. What To Do With A Rotator Cuff Tear

Let's assume you've had some shoulder pain that won't seem to go away. It's a pain that might be in the front or back of your shoulder and possibly radiates down the side of your arm towards the middle of your upper limb. Overhead activities such as lifting or reaching may aggravate it. You might feel pain and discomfort when you try to sleep on that particular side. By now you may  notice weakness of your arm and difficulty with routine daily activities such as combing your hair or reaching behind your back. It's possible you felt the cause of the injury during an acute episode, where you went to do something and felt it immediately. But more likely it's something that's happened and you can't quite put your finger on what may have caused it. So you report to your GP and/or Physio and through a series of clinical tests and maybe even an ultrasound or MRI they see [...]

Strains vs sprains: our Highett physio explains!

Strains, sprains, tomato, tom-ah-to… While they may sound pretty close, the truth is that strains and sprains are two completely separate issues, and as such, require slightly different treatments. Due to their similar-sounding names however, many people wind up using the two terms interchangeably - something that our Highett physio hears all the time!  It’s true that strains and sprains refer to damage to soft tissues in the body, and share many similar symptoms. However, that’s where the similarities end. Today, we’ll be explaining the difference between these two common injuries, and how that affects your treatment plan... What’s a sprain? Ligaments are tough bands of fibrous tissue that play a crucial role in your joints. Specifically, ligaments are what hold the entire joint together, and are responsible for connecting bones to other bones. And as the thing that holds your joints together, sprains can prove to be especially debilitating, and can drastically affect your lifestyle. Sprains involve stretching and [...]

An Highett physio explains physiotherapist training

The job of your Highett physio is to assess, diagnose, treat and prevent a wide range of musculoskeletal issues that impact people’s movement and physical function. We often find ourselves working with those who’ve suffered from accidents, injuries or long-running health problems. Using a tailored combination of exercise, movement analysis, manual therapy and specialist techniques, we can help restore, improve and promote health. The human body is a complex machine. In order to make the right diagnosis,  physiotherapists need extensive training in muscle and skeletal conditions, as well as sports injuries, body mechanics and the healing process. Today, our Highett physio will be shining a spotlight on the training and education needed before we can call ourselves physiotherapists. Step 1: complete your education It starts with your degree... To become a physiotherapist, the first step is to complete a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from an accredited institution. As a medical-related field, the entry requirements are quite strict - for starters, the [...]

How To Eliminate Shoulder and Neck Pain [Hack]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF_mv63hdmw&feature=youtu.be Neck pain can be completely immobilising! It's one of the most common complaints I deal with in our Highett clinic every single day. It can occur due to a given event for e.g: a knock during a sporting contest or a motor vehicle accident. But it can also happen seemingly out of the blue. I've had many patients who wake up with an excruciatingly painful and 'locked' neck who come banging down my door pleading for help (which I provide obviously). However, here's the thing; I can eliminate that pain very successfully in very little time. But the question you should be asking yourself is ' how do I reduce my chances of this happening again?' Which is why I've chosen to include links to 2 great articles below. In this video I share a really handy, dead simple way to help reduce shoulder and neck pain by correcting posture. This was done with K-tape. We have many different [...]
