Leg pain? An Highett physio shares 4 running mistakes you’re making

Running - how hard could it be? After all, you’re just putting one foot in front of the other, right? Unfortunately, it’s exactly that attitude that’s behind so many leg and foot injuries! There’s much more to running than just putting on a pair of trainers and going for it. Believe it or not however, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes when you go out for a run. And with that comes the risk of lower leg pain - especially if you have no idea how to run properly! What kind of problems might I run into? Injuries and falls aren’t the only problems you might run into when you go out for a jog - each step you take when you run sends shockwaves up your legs. Over time, these shockwaves can damage the tissue, ligaments and cartilage in your legs. This can lead to a whole host of different lower leg pains, including: Microfractures Muscle tears [...]

How to fix a sprained ankle

Everyone knows someone who has sprained or rolled their ankle. And it’s one of those pesky injuries that has a habit of coming back again and again. Around 34% of people who have sprained their ankle once, will sprain it at least once more – and that’s concerning. For me, I’ve been involved in netball both professionally and personally for years, and ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries I see. But the thing is - no one seems to take them too seriously. Often, players will continue playing despite the injury and pain because “everyone rolls their ankle” or “it’s just an ankle”. But, hearing this as an ankle physio is like hearing nails on a chalkboard. Not only does playing on with an injury put you at a greater risk of suffering another injury, you’re almost certainly going to worsen the injury. And all of this goes for ankle sprains outside of netball, like for those [...]

A case of the dreaded heel pain: A Highett Physio explains achilles tendinopathy

Your 4 Stage Guide To Escaping Achilles Tendon Pain If you’ve ever been debilitated by sharp and/or aching pain in your achilles or heel, then you know it’s certainly not fun. In fact, it’s every runner’s worst nightmare. But you don’t have to be a runner to fall victim to a case of achilles or heel pain. If you’ve suffered heel pain or pain in the lower calf in the past and haven’t been able to fully kick it to the curb - ask yourself the following: Do you have pain and stiffness in the back of your ankle/bottom of your calf? Do you have any swelling or can you feel a palpable little lump (nodule) on your achilles? Do you feel like your strength in that leg has been affected? Do you have any redness or does it feel ‘inflamed’? Can you move your ankle fully and without pain? If this sounds familiar, you may be experiencing a case [...]

Chronic pain and central sensitisation

As a new graduate physiotherapist, I have learnt so much in my first two months of practice. Finally, theory has been put into practice and I’ve been challenged when seeing a range of different people with different conditions every day. It’s been satisfying to learn that I can confidently treat every person who walks through my door and make improvements to their pain and function. For many of my clients, pain is the reason they come to see me: pain has become a factor restricting them from doing what they want to do. In some cases, this pain is from a recent injury and for others it has been a gradual build up that has now become too much to bear. In most cases I can work with my clients to reduce their pain and eventually improve their function quite quickly. However, something I’ve found myself questioning following some of my appointments, is why this process can be much slower [...]

Acute wry neck explained – the bible to managing acute neck pain

Are you suffering from recent and sudden neck pain? Is the pain very severe? Does your neck feel stiff and the surrounding muscles feel tight? Do you have a reduced ability to confidently move your neck through its normal ranges of motion? Are you unable to move your neck pain-free? Are you having trouble turning to safely perform a head check whilst driving your car? Is your sleeping disrupted due to pain? If you have answered yes to the above questions, there is a high possibility that you are suffering from what is called an “acute wry neck”, otherwise referred to as “torticollis”. The term “acute” is explained as a sudden onset of severe pain, whilst “wry neck” refers to the presence of stiffness and associated muscle spasm (tightness) from the base of the skull down to the shoulder blade. What causes this sudden painful neck pain? There are multiple causes of an acute wry neck, however the most common [...]

An Highett physiotherapist explains why warm-up exercises are crucial

Very few of us question it: of course warm-ups are important. Whether you’re a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, you no doubt understand the importance of a good warm-up. Our physiotherapist in Highett examines the importance of warming up before exercising or engaging in sport. Warm-ups 101: how a good warm-up routine helps Maybe you’ve turned up late Perhaps you need to leave earlier. Maybe you just can’t be bothered! No matter the reason, it can be tempting to skip the mandatory warm-up before you start your workout. A physiotherapist in Highett explains mistakes you make while sitting

At Physio AUS, many of the cases we treat are athletes, tradies and people recovering from injury - in other words, people who either spend a lot of time either using their bodies or who need physical therapy. So you’d think office workers would be safe, right? Wrong! While office workers aren’t so much subject to problems such as injury or overuse (generally speaking), they do face plenty of their own unique challenges. Spending most of your day seated can lead to problems - here are just some of of the most common ones our physiotherapist in Highett has treated over the years. The dangers of spending too much time seated When your muscles are underused, you may experience a wide range of negative consequences (which we’ve talked about before). Here’s a quick recap of the bigger ones... Loss of muscle strength That’s because low activity can lead to muscle degeneration. And unfortunately, your muscles aren’t exactly something you can [...]

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some of Australia’s leading athletes. Not only have I rubbed shoulders with some of the best in the world at their chosen sports - I’ve also been responsible for helping them perform at their best. The opportunity to work alongside leading athletes is one of the highlights of my job as a physiotherapist. However, physiotherapy isn’t the sole domain of elite athletes. The goal of physiotherapy is to help you perform at your optimum. That doesn’t just mean helping you deal with injuries and pains - [...]
