Remedial Massage Therapy

At Physio AUS, our purpose is to provide tailored treatments that help you overcome musculoskeletal problems.

To that end, we have many treatments that we prescribe depending on your unique needs.

One treatment we frequently employ in the fight against musculoskeletal pain is remedial massage therapy.

Remedial massage therapy and physiotherapy are great complements: it isn’t uncommon for both to be prescribed alongside each other as part of your unique treatment plan.

Both are indispensable parts of your physio treatment.

Physio Treatment for Head and Neck Pain

What makes remedial massage therapy different from a regular back rub?

In one word: healing.

There’s nothing like a nice, relaxing massage to help you unwind.

When done a certain way however, massage can do much more than just that!

The truth is relaxation and remedial massage are worlds apart. The only things they share are the basics – intent, technique, and pressure are all completely different.

Remedial massage therapy targets specific muscle groups with the goal of relieving pain. Your physio uses their knuckles, thumbs and elbows to apply pressure that reaches deeper layers of muscle.

All of this can…

Stimulate blood flow

When muscles tense up, they can press down on on your veins. This impedes blood circulation, which is responsible for supplying oxygen and flushing away metabolic waste like lactic acid.

Massage stimulates circulation by relaxing your muscles. This opens your veins back up, getting blood to flow once again.

Help make joints more mobile

In addition to improving the flow of blood, massage helps inhibit pain signals from your brain to the body. This means you can often experience an increase in how much you can move your body after treatment.

Release tension and undo ‘knots’

Muscle knots occur when muscle fibres “stick” to each other.

By applying pressure directly to these knots, massage therapy can release them, reducing the associated pain and easing muscle tension.

Encourage healing of damaged tissue

Oxygen isn’t the only thing your blood carries to your muscles.

By improving blood circulation, massage therapy also improves the flow of the all-important white blood cells which are crucial to repairing damaged tissue.

How remedial massage works

How remedial massage works

Mechanical response

Remedial massage therapy targets damaged, knotted, and immobilised tissue deep in your body.

Using carefully-applied pressure and physical manipulation, massage activates these muscle, tissue, and veins.

This has the side effect of normalising tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments), which releases nerves and deeper connective tissue.

Additionally, it also increases blood circulation, improving oxygen delivery, reducing swelling and flushing away waste products such as lactic acid.

Relaxation response

Remedial massage therapy triggers your body’s relaxation response. As a result, the brain releases the hormone serotonin.

Serotonin is often referred to as “the happy chemical”. It regulates mood, and plays a key role in motivation, appetite, and depression.

And according to some research, it may also play a role in pain perception and management!

The Physio AUS process

Each case begins with a breakthrough session.

This one-on-one session includes an in-depth discussion of your unique musculoskeletal issues, as well as your previous medical history and health goals.

During your initial breakthrough, your physio will determine the cause of your muscle pain, and whether remedial massage is an appropriate treatment option.

Once we understand exactly what’s causing your pain, we get to work building you a custom treatment plan that relieve your pain and help you overcome your unique musculoskeletal conditions.

Physio Treatment for Head and Neck Pain

That can include a variety of remedial massage treatments, either in conjunction with other physiotherapy techniques or on their own.

At Physio AUS, we offer a wide variety of remedial massage treatments, including:

  • Deep-tissue massage

  • Myofascial release
  • Trigger point therapy

  • Sports massage

Each type of massage targets different clusters of muscle and uses different massage techniques.

That way, they can target and help relieve specific types of pain or musculoskeletal conditions.
